Hello All!
I hope this finds everyone well. It has been some time since I sent this newsletter so I will use this issue to mention some noteworthy events and trivia. It's been some time since the locals here in the city have gathered so nothing new to report on that front, except that the Bahama Breeze and the Varsity Sports Bar are both either defunct or undergoing re-organization..? However, the call is out for someone to step forward and offer their homestead for a little holiday cheer and celebration. :-) Contact Sara Jo Odom if you wish to host!
September, 2007 A very significant event happened last September which I will belatedly relate to you now. That being the 5th Annual Charity Golf Classic- in Memory of Ray Moss - sponsored by the Friends of Northwest Classen High School Foundation (The Northwest Classen Alumni Association).
This event was held at the Twin Hills Golf and Country Club September 17, and was a huge success, netting almost $50,000 to benefit the current faculty and students. Below are a few of the participants:
Students, teachers, & past graduates gathered to celebrate 41 grants from the Friends of Northwest Classen totaling nearly $50,000 for everything from science, the library, the arts, to college visits. Tamie Sanders, principal, said, It has changed the climate of our school. My kids know that community people care about them.
They also received a donation of two high tech basketball scoreboards. Many thanks to their generous friends & supporters.
The charity golf tournament raised money to help school staff purchase much needed equipment and materials to benefit the students. Grants totaling $36,000 were awarded to 14 teachers and the principal. Former Oklahoma City Mayors and NW Classen High School alumni Kirk Humphreys and Ron Norick helped present the awards and both participated in the golf tournament. The Foundation saved some of the proceeds to start an endowment so that this grant program may continue in the future.
The Northwest Classen Alumni Association is a non-profit organization serving
alumni and friends of Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City. Presently there are
over 500 members. The goal of the organization is to be of service to Northwest
Classen and to alumni. In keeping with this, the NWCAA sponsors clean-up
days, helps out with Homecoming, is collecting historical items and is
working to help classes with their reunions, along with a host of other
projects. One of the best services of the NWCAA is the membership newsletter
"The New Shield". This publication contains information on association
events, happenings at the school, reunion notices, and lots of other neat
stuff. Click here for more, and how to join, on the NWCAA website.
